LED efficacy has plateaued. What comes next?

The easy efficiency gains are behind us. The next decade belongs to control, quality and longevity.

Diminishing returns on lumens per watt

LED efficacy climbed steeply for a decade and has flattened. Practical luminaire efficacy in the 120–150 lm/W range is now routine, and pushing further costs more than it saves. Energy strategy has to come from elsewhere.

Controls are the remaining lever

A fitting that is off, or at twenty per cent, beats a marginally more efficient fitting at full output every time. Presence detection, daylight linking and honest scene design deliver savings that no further efficacy gain can match.

Quality is becoming the differentiator

With efficiency broadly solved, specification is shifting to what light looks like: high R9, tight binning, warm dimming, low flicker and genuine glare control. These are the attributes that separate products now.

Longevity and circularity

Regulation is moving towards serviceable, repairable luminaires with replaceable light engines and drivers. A sealed fitting that must be discarded when one component fails is increasingly difficult to justify, commercially and environmentally.
