What circularity means for lighting specification

Repairable luminaires, replaceable engines and the end of the sealed disposable fitting.

The sealed fitting problem

A generation of LED luminaires was built as sealed units. When the driver fails at year eight the whole fitting is scrapped, including a perfectly good housing, optic and heatsink. That model is now under regulatory and commercial pressure.

Design for disassembly

Serviceable luminaires separate the housing, light engine, driver and optic, each replaceable independently and with standard tools. It costs a little more up front and transforms the whole-life cost of a building.

Specification language that helps

Ask for the replaceable components to be named, the spares availability period stated in years, and the disassembly method documented. Manufacturers who have designed for it will answer immediately; those who have not will change the subject.

The regional picture

Green building frameworks in the UAE and Saudi Arabia are steadily adding material and circularity criteria. Projects specifying serviceable product today are positioning themselves ahead of requirements that are clearly coming.
